Bond Projects Update
Groundbreaking for M&O/Sheriff's Station Set April 26
LAVC's Maintenance & Operations and Sheriff's Station structure will be the first LEED-certified, bond-funded building to be constructed in the District. Groundbreaking ceremonies will take place on April 26. Contractor CTP Construction, Inc., of Anaheim, CA, was selected from among 11 companies bidding on the job. The new building is actually three connecting structures forming a compound with an inner yard. The $6.6 million, 28,000 square foot, one-story structure will be built in Parking Lot D behind the softball field and will house maintenance offices, shipping and receiving, warehouse offices, and Sheriff's personnel and operations. The project is expected to be completed in Spring of 2006. At that time, the existing M&O site and Sheriff's Station will be demolished so construction can begin on the Allied Health and Sciences Center.
New Exterior Paint Project Underway
The exteriors of most campus buildings will have an earth-tone color scheme by the end of the Spring semester. Outside stucco walls will be a dark crËme, with a deep mocha color on window treatments and surrounding borders. Buildings to be painted include Administration, Foreign Language, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Math/Science, Life and Behavioral Sciences, Humanities, Planetarium, Business Journalism, Theatre Arts, Art and Music, Campus Center, and Bungalow 78. Meanwhile, the North Stadium bleachers will be painted a medium beige, and the scoreboard, doors, and other accents will be green and yellow. The Cafeteria building, Arcade overheads and walkways, and the Library will be painted during a subsequent project.
Interior Paint Project to Begin Late June
Classrooms and hallways of the Campus Center second floor will be painted after the Spring term ends and is scheduled to be finished by the beginning of the Fall semester.
Art Gallery Ceiling Completed
LAVC's Art Gallery has a new black-painted ceiling, new lights, and a new security system, just in time to showcase its current exhibit "Made in L.A.: The Posters of Peace Press" through May 5. Art building courtyard renovations are in the design phase.
Bidding Underway for Foreign Language Building Interior
Contractor bids are being accepted for an interior modernization project in the Foreign Language building that will include selected demolition; refurbishment of classrooms and offices; renovation of restrooms; and selected mechanical, plumbing, and electrical system work. Construction is scheduled to start mid-June and should be completed by the beginning of the Fall semester.
Allied Health & Sciences Center on Target
California's Department of State Architecture (DSA) has reviewed and evaluated the drawings for LAVC's new 3-story, 100,000-square-foot Allied Health and Sciences Center, and DSA approval is expected by the end of March or early April. The building is on target to receive June state funding, which will help finance the construction scheduled to begin in Spring of 2006 on the current M&O/Sheriff's Station site.
Plan Approved for Phase I of Athletic Field & Facilities
A revised plan has been approved by the college's Facility and Master Planning Committee to implement Phase I of the renovation and expansion of LAVC's athletic facilities. Scheduled for refurbishment are the Monarch track and soccer field, public restrooms, ticket booth, concession stand, entry plaza, track and field storage, and jogging track and practice field. In addition, public toilets will be installed at the baseball field.
EIR Traffic Mitigation Measures Determined
The Department of Transportation has determined that the traffic study in LAVC's 2003 EIR adequately describes the impact of campus growth on the surrounding streets. The traffic study conclusions are based on an estimated enrollment increase from the current 13,393 FTE to 15,693 FTE in 2008. Affected intersections to be upgraded are Woodman Ave. and Oxnard St., Coldwater Canyon Ave. and Victory, Coldwater Canyon and Oxnard, and Coldwater Canyon and Burbank Blvd.
